“What is he ruling on ending a prohibited romantic relationship while awaiting a lawful marriage.”?
Answer
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. To proceed:
The girl bears no sin for ending this relationship. Rather, doing so is obligatory if the communication between them takes place outside the framework prescribed by Islamic law, because feelings do not justify the continuation of a prohibited relationship or an open-ended waiting period whose outcome is unknown.
She will not be regarded as having wronged him before Allah, Exalted be He, for he has no right over her that obliges her to remain with him or to continue communicating with him. If he is serious about marriage, his course of action is to formally approach her family in accordance with Islamic law when he has the means to do so. Otherwise, both parties are required to cut off the means that may lead to temptation, repent to Allah, and ask Allah to decree what is best for each of them.
And Allah, the Most High, knows best.
