What is the ruling on using nutmeg in food?

With reference to your question as stated above, scholars have expressed two opinions on this matter: the first is that it is prohibited, while the second is that it is permissible. Those who hold the view of prohibition consider this to be due to its intoxicating and narcotic effects when used in large quantities. Many scholars, however, have held that using a small amount of nutmeg to enhance food is permissible. This is the opinion we adopt in issuing this fatwa.
