I am a university student which means that I need to talk to females from time to time depending on what is required. I am considered a committed man, but sometimes I need to study or discus certain issues with girls who do not wear hijab or who put on makeup. On the other hand, when I go to the mosque to pray the Tarawih, the men there ask me to be the Imam. Am I considered hypocrite?
Answer
Praise Be to Allah and Peace Be Upon His Messenger.
Coeducation and being associated with females are not haram as long as a Muslim is committed to the Islamic rules of communication. In every aspect of life, there are men who work or study along with women. However, the Islamic rules of communication should be taken into account. There should be restrictions. If you are required to communicate with classmates, let it be restricted to studying only. Do not go beyond that.
Regarding being an Imam, this should be a motivation for you so as to stay in the right path because the Imam is usually seen as a model. Whatever the Imam does is observed by others. So, let people see right and virtuous actions. Always behave well.
