Where should the follower performing a congregation prayer stand in relation to the imam?
Answer
Praise be to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:
If only one man is praying with the imam, it is recommended that he stand to the imam’s right, level with him, neither ahead of him nor behind him. This is based on the hadith of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, reported in the two authentic collections, in which he said: “I stayed overnight with my maternal aunt. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, got up to pray during the night, so I stood and prayed with him. I stood to his left, so he took me by the head and moved me to his right.”
Some scholars held that it is recommended for the follower to stand slightly behind the imam. If two or more people are praying with the imam, they should stand behind him.
The Sunnah is for the imam to stand ahead of the followers when the mosque has sufficient space, and for the followers to form a row behind him when there is more than one of them. This is because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would move ahead of the people praying when he led them in prayer. However, if the imam stands among the followers because the space is too limited, the prayer is still valid.
