What is the ruling on a mixed-gender wedding?
Answer
Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and those who follow him. To proceed:
At the outset, it seems strange that your family insists on engaging in what is prohibited and is so adamant about it, and that they have linked the mixed-gender wedding, which is prohibited, to their assistance to you
The proper course is to reach an agreement with your family on a format for the wedding in which there is no mixing between men and women and men do not enter the women's area. A separate celebration should be held for the men, with singing that is permissible and free from vulgar language or anything that arouses sexual desires. In this way, joy and singing can take place without committing prohibited acts.
If your family nevertheless insists on their position, then agree with your bride and her family to postpone the marriage, perhaps your family may eventually become convinced of your view. In the meantime, try to ask people who have influence with your family to persuade them, especially those who have a good relationship with them. Do not neglect to make frequent supplication, so that Allah may guide your family and facilitate your affairs.
