What is the ruling on having someone attend classes and take examinations on one’s behalf?
Answer
It is not permissible to appoint someone to attend lectures or take examinations in your name, whether in return for payment or without payment, if the university requires the student to attend in person or to take the examination personally. This constitutes impersonation, cheating, a breach of trust, and a violation of the regulations that you accepted upon enrollment. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever cheats is not one of us.”
The fact that you are a member of the military or that you need points for promotion does not alter the ruling. The need for promotion does not make it permissible to attain it through a prohibited means. Nor is it permissible for another person to attend classes or take examinations on your behalf, nor is it permissible to accept payment for such a service, as doing so constitutes assistance in cheating and sin.
