Is it allowed to congratulate non-Muslims on their holidays?
Answer
Praise Be to Allah and Peace Be Upon His Messenger.
Initially, Peaceful coexistence is the necessary. The Muslim, when dealing with non-Muslims, has to pay attention to two things: treating them well and kindly as long as they are peaceful, and being proud that they are Muslims. Allah says: Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion nor drove you out of your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity. It is only as regards those who fought against you on account of religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and helped to drive you out, that Allah forbids you to befriend them. And whosoever will befriend
them, then such are the Ẓālimūn (wrong‑doers — those who disobey Allah.”
Al-Mumtahanah: 8-9
Many hadiths were narrated which tell us how our prophet was kind to them and treated them justly and nicely. It happened that when a funeral of a Jew passed by him, he stood, as a gesture of respect. Therefore, if such a holiday does not contradict with our Islamic teachings and instructions, we can congratulate them.
