I work as a lawyer. It happens that some clients authorize me to finalize some financial record procedures. I was informed that some clients need this to get a usurious loan. I do not go with them to the bank. However, what I do may be used for other lawful purposes, i.e. not exclusively to get the loan. What is the ruling on the payment which I get from these clients?
Answer
Praise Be to Allah and Peace Be Upon His Messenger.
If what you do has two sides: lawful and unlawful, and you are not informed of the purpose of your job, then, you are not to blame. However, if you know the purpose of what you do, which is to get the usurious loan, then the payment that you get is unlawful and what you do is haram since you help them do the unlawful thing. Allah says: “Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression.” A-Ma’idah: 2
