At the beginning of Islam, when Allah started to reveal the verses of the Holy Qur’an, the addressees were the people who lived then. Words which were used at the time have different meanings now. For example, the word “Jilbab” used to mean what is worn by men to cover their bodies and protect them from sunshine. Then Allah ordained women to wear it provided that it should be made of rough fabrics, and it should not be transparent. These days, people interpret the word Jilbab as the long robe which is worn to cover the whole body. My father wants me to wear it; however, I do not want as I will
Answer
Praise Be to Allah and Peace Be Upon His Messenger.
Wearing the Jilbab is a duty. It is not about protecting a body from sunshine or so. What is meant by this order is being modest. A woman should cover her body by wearing what is loose and not transparent. However, Islamic Shari’a does not give details about the model or fabrics of Jilbab if what is worn meets the goal. The clothes that a Muslim woman should wear must not be similar to other non-Muslim women’s clothes; they should not be worn to make you famed. Thus, wearing the Jilbab is considered obedience to Allah, not to any body else.
