Reference number: 220946 | Pilgrimage: Hajj and Umrah | March 20, 2023
I entered the state of Ihram while I was on the plane without wearing the appropriate required clothes of Ihram; I had the intention of performing Umrah. I had not known before that I must wear clothes of Ihram at the Miqat, and actually, I did not have them with me, so I kept on wearing my normal clothes; what shall I do?
Answer
Praise Be to Allah and Peace Be Upon His Messenger.
It is dutiful for a Muslim who wants to perform Hajj or Umrah to wear special clothes; for example, two unstitched white pieces of clothes. These clothes must be worn at the Miqat; the ordinary clothes must be taken off. In addition, the Muslim must observe the prohibitions of Ihram so as to avoid doing them. If a Muslim got the intention of performing Umrah and passed by the Miqat without wearing the special clothes, he is to pay ransom which could be a choice of the followings: feeding six poor people, (with a certain amount of food), or fasting for three days, or slaughtering a goat. Others see that if a Muslim did not find the Ihram clothes to be worn at the Miqat, there are no consequences, and he does not have to do anything. However, the first opinion is preponderant and saves you from wasting your Umrah unintentionally.
