What Is the Islamic Ruling on Announcing on Social Media That One Has Completed Memorizing the Holy Qur’an Out of Joy at This Achievement
Answer
Whether a person announces that they have completed memorizing the Book of Allah depends largely on their intention.
If the announcement is made to acknowledge Allah’s blessings, encourage peers to memorize the Qur’an, or express gratitude to their Qur’an teachers and those responsible for Qur’an memorization centers, then it is permissible and commendable.
However, if the intention is to show off, gain a reputation, or receive praise from others, this constitutes riyā’ (ostentation), which can invalidate the reward of one’s deeds.
A stern warning of Hellfire has been issued against those who seek knowledge for purposes other than seeking the pleasure of Allah. According to a hadith narrated by Ibn Mājah and others and graded ḥasan (good) by al-Albānī, Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“Whoever seeks knowledge to boast before scholars, to argue with the foolish, or to attract people’s attention, Allah will admit him into Hellfire.”
If there is a need to make such an announcement, it is advisable to word it in a way that avoids self-admiration and self-praise.
