What is the ruling if one breaks their fast 5 minutes earlier thinking that the Adhan has started?
Answer
Praise Be to Allah and Peace Be Upon His Messenger.
Referring to your question, it is agreed upon that whoever eats after the Dawn Adhan start, or whoever breaks their fast before the Maghreb Adhan starts should make that day up after Ramadan. This is mentioned in all jurisprudence schools: the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali. However, one should know that the one who does so by mistake thinking that the Adhan has started is not to be considered sinful. The prophet said: “Allah has forgiven my nations their mistakes, forgetfulness, and what they are forced to do.” This means that what has be done by mistake is forgiven, and the doer is not sinful; however, they should make up that day.
